Laredo Community College was created as Laredo Junior College on September 28, 1946, by the citizens of Laredo Independent School District in Laredo, Texas. The name of the College was changed to Laredo Community College in August 1993. The district expanded to include two campuses in the spring of 2004. Both Campuses serve a three county area; Webb County, Jim Hogg County, and Zapata County

Texas A&M International University is a public, co-educational, state-supported university located in Laredo, Texas. It is a member institution of The Texas A&M University System. Texas A&M International University offers undergraduate and graduate and doctoral degrees through three colleges and a school. The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, andt he undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Business Administration are accredited by AACSB International. TAMIU's College of Business ranks as the 3rd best university in the country for providing the "Greatest Opportunity for Minority Students.", and the College of Business Administration was named a "Best Business School" by The Princeton Review in its 2006 edition of "Best 237 Business Schools".

The University of Texas Health Science Center also has a campus in Laredo.

Laredo has two school districts: Laredo Independent School District, United Independent School District. The LISD has 3 high schools, 4 middle schools, 20 elementary schools, 3 magnet schools, and 2 other schools/campuses. The UISD has 4 high schools, 9 middle schools, and 26 elementary schools.
