Originally settled by the Spanish in 1755, Laredo, TX was ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican American War. Despite the fact that many of the Hispanic residents left Laredo to found Nuevo Laredo at this time, more than 90% of modern Laredo's 217,000 residents identify themselves as being at least partially of Hispanic descent.
Laredo, TX's economy, as would be expected for such a convenient border-crossing city, is based almost entirely around trade with Mexico. Most of the major players in the transportation and distribution industries have facilities in Laredo and complimentary facilities across the border in Nuevo Laredo.
